The Poster that was just too Hot to Handle….

The ever shrinking GOP tent

How the California GOP panicked at the thought of being confronted by Facts

I have written a book designed to reach out to those critical thinkers that remain in the ever shrinking GOP tent.  I applied for a booth at the upcoming GOP California convention. I thought this would be a great place to initiate my outreach. The book had specifically mentioned California as a place where recent law changes had the potential to help make politics less polarizing – the books quotes GOP congressman actually saying something quite exciting. This is what I wrote about California:

As The New York Times goes on to report, Stupidparty representatives in more logically drawn up districts have to contend with a less-partisan base. Now such representatives (not having been selected from a partisan primary) have to deal with the realities of an election where the outcome is not preordained; they have to be more responsive to their constituents and be sensitive to the changing demographics. Stupidparty reps have to listen to minorities, immigrants, etc., and they can then begin to morph back into Republicans, back into being in touch with humanity.

Republican Rep. Anthony Cannella (for he is no longer Stupidparty) is quoted as saying, “It’s given more courage to my Republican colleagues . . . They were afraid of getting primaries. Now, it’s not just their base they have to appeal to.”

Another Republican: “It gives Republicans the chance to break from their caucus on certain issues . . . It is very different than it was four or five years ago.”

Personal details redacted

So I filled out the application form, being careful to be transparent about my book – see the attached pertinent part of the application,  gave the Credit card details, and was and then waited expectantly. Initially there was no response, then I chased and was delighted to get the following response:

So I started making preparations, to design and print appropriate marketing materials, business cards, made arrangements for flight, hotel, car rental details and so on. I was going to sunny California for the weekend; maybe I could drop by and see some friends, relax at a pool – what fun. But I still was somewhat concerned that I might arrive and be met with a hostile reaction by some bureaucrat who would not have had the chance to read the book (since at this point in time it was not available) so I decided to make doubly sure that everything was copacetic. So I sent the following email.

“I appreciate your acceptance of my application.  Please find attached the flyer for the book and below is a link with a sample of the book.

As the application indicated we wish to use our booth to promote an important new book that provides a counterpoint to many of the distractions facing our great party. It was written by a life-long and now disgruntled Conservative, with an international perspective, who has a strong belief in fiscal discipline and critical thinking. The author believes the party needs to refocus on the issues that matter most to the GOP, the Country and the leadership role the USA plays in issues impacting all peoples across the globe. The author recognizes that certain reforms that have taken place in California have the potential to start making politics less polarizing. The book has been well received by reviewers of all political stripes and even readers who tend not to read political books.

Thank you again for giving the author the chance to start this important debate in California.

If you have any questions please feel free to call

Best Regards“

This was the front page of the flyer that I planned to hand out.
I do not believe anything below is unreasonable – my central pitch being that here we have an author, a capitalist, an entrepreneur with a grounding in economics, a certain knowledge of religion, who happens to be concerned about the “end of times”, an event that will not be preceded by four horses running down main street, but far more likely a result man’s stupidity, the loss of the inclination to engage in critical thinking, in Math’s, in facts, in basic decency and common sense values. So we all need to save the Republican Party – to take the Stupid out of Stupidparty.
This was the front page of the flyer:

And this was the back page of the Flyer that I intended to hand out:

Having sent this out – back to work I go with all my preparations. I would have to find a dog sitter while I was away; figure out how to comply with my Ford C Max Hybrid being recalled yet again, and buy some suntan lotion….

So imagine my devastation when I received the below email:

 Good afternoon….

In review of your materials, we have determined that your exhibitor materials and booth content do not comply with our Exhibitor Policy, and under section 1 of that policy, we are rescinding your exhibitor booth approval.  This email serves as notice that we are unable to provide you with a booth at convention.

Devastated – I do a Fred Astaire, “pick yourself up dust yourself off and start all over again“. Back to work I must go, trying figure out where I can pitch my tent.
