It Gets Stupid: How did the religious right become an advocate for teen suicide?

October 14, 2015 By Jason Newell Leave a Comment

Guest post by Matthew 7:1 from the Imaginary Gay Agenda:

“I’ve often been curious why the outrage of Christian fundamentalists seems to revolve around foodstuffs. From rainbow wrappers on Whoppers, to places that sell pickle-stained chicken sandwiches and support the crusades of hate in Africa, to doritos393x393.jpgpasta companies that alienate customers seemingly for no reason, to cake bakeries that refuse to sell actual cakes – We’ve seen a lot of fuss made related to food and advertising. Clearly this is one area that is easy for organized religion to target for the latest wave of faux outrage.I usually find it quite funny, but the latest in this seemingly never-ending quest for food outrage struck a nerve with me. When Doritos teamed up with the It Gets Better campaign to send the message that life does get better after the years of bullying one must undergo as a sort of sick rite of passage in schools, the Christian right came out of the antique woodwork once again to send the message to Dorito’s Frito-Lay company that it does NOT get better, and that LGBT people are a fringe population who don’t deserve to receive this kind of message.

But in so doing, what they are actively doing is sending a message that bullying is preferable to acknowledging the struggles of LGBT kids. In their zeal for outrage, they are sending a clear message that they have totally lost focus on what matters. They have gone too far this time in saying that even acknowledging the struggles of LGBT kids is a bad idea. These kids are well-known to be at much higher risks for suicide, and when it comes to transgender kids this is unbearably high. Anybody with Google can look it up, but instead of supporting a cause that says, “you are loved and appreciated and your life will get better,” the ‘religious right’ has attempted to stifle this message. In so doing, they are giving their consent to bullies, and to -ultimately- the suicides of innocent young people. (And they say they are Pro-Life and followers of a loving Christ?)…”
