“The summer of 2015 has been extraordinary for a number of reasons. The end of June marked the SCOTUS decision to make same-sex marriage legal Nationwide. At the same time, another civil rights struggle was rekindled when a group of innocent people were killed in Charleston. We finally saw a stubborn sign of smug racism removed from the South Carolina statehouse. We also saw racism gain ground with the surge in popularity for Donald Trump, due to his openly racist comments about Mexican immigrants. We saw the GOP dividing itself along the lines of who supports the bad behavior of the Republican uneducated base, and who would attempt to distance themselves from it in order to gain traction in the upcoming Presidential elections, however slight the distance really is.
It is amidst this backdrop that we must view the latest scandal: The department store Target dared to follow in the footsteps of Walmart and Toys “R” Us and remove outdated pink and blue gender-based signs from the toy and bedding aisles. Is it me, or are people just as outraged about that as about what happened in Charleston, or the taking down of the Confederate flag? Or even about same-sex marriage? Wave after wave of what I must consider faux outraged people made their way to Target’s Facebook page, posting vitriolic comments comparing the taking down of these simple signs to the imaginary agenda of making children become transgender, to the “pussification” of the country, or even to the denial of God’s very natural order. Conservatives are the world’s very best drama queens. I can only find relief in laughing at their antics…”
